1. The short version
smashcut.io uses only cookies that are strictly necessary to run the site and keep you signed in. We do not use advertising cookies, tracking pixels, or third-party analytics, and we do not build profiles of visitors or share data with advertisers.
Because these cookies are strictly necessary, EU and UK law lets us set them without asking for consent. If we ever add cookies that are not strictly necessary — analytics, for example — we will ask for your consent first, and you will be able to refuse as easily as accept.
2. What a cookie is
A cookie is a small text file a site stores in your browser. Related technologies such as localStorage work similarly. We use the term "cookies" for all of them below.
3. Cookies we set
Every cookie below is strictly necessary. They exist only when you sign in, and they are set by Clerk, the identity provider that handles authentication for SmashCut (see the Privacy policy, Section 8).
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Category | Expires |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| __session | Clerk | Keeps you signed in and authorises requests to your account area. | Strictly necessary | Session (short-lived, refreshed while you browse) |
| __client_uat | Clerk | Records when your session was last authenticated so the site can tell signed-in from signed-out without exposing the session token. | Strictly necessary | Session |
| __clerk_db_jwt | Clerk | Development-instance sign-in support. Only present on non-production builds. | Strictly necessary | Session |
Exact names and lifetimes are set by Clerk and may change as they update their service. You can inspect the current cookies at any time in your browser's developer tools, under Application → Cookies.
4. What we do not use
- No advertising or marketing cookies. We do not run ads and do not share data with ad networks.
- No third-party analytics. We do not use Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, or similar services on this site.
- No cross-site tracking. We do not track you across other websites.
5. The desktop app
The SmashCut desktop app is not a website and does not use cookies. It stores your preferences and sign-in tokens locally on your own device, encrypted by your operating system's secure storage where available. See the Privacy policy for what the app sends to us.
6. Managing cookies
Because the cookies we set are strictly necessary, there is nothing to opt out of — but you remain in control:
- Sign out to clear your session cookies.
- Block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking them will stop you from signing in and from using the account area, but the rest of the site will work.
If we introduce non-essential cookies in future, a consent banner will appear here first, and you will be able to change your choice at any time.
7. Changes
We will update this page if our use of cookies changes, and change the "Last updated" date above.
